ooooJanet Payne - Contemporary Artist
I am interested in the boundaries between needlework and art, embroidery and paint, trying to break new ground, whilst still retaining the context and ideology of painting and sculpture.
My sculptures are about transformation and identity, using very mundane found objects and making them into something visually and aesthetically pleasing. They can also be interpreted as artefacts.
The 2D works are made through a process of cutting and machining piping and are then mounted onto a wooden frame or board, followed by hand stitching, drawing the cords together (like smocking) to produce interesting patterns. My 3D works are made in a similar process using found objects. The covering of objects is a way of covering up my past. A kind of closure on an unhappy childhood. Evident in the work. 'Seen But Not Heard'.
